Notes and Editorial Reviews

Shostakovich’s film music has received a lot of attention recently, largely because all of it is now published and is readily available, and also because the music includes a lot of populist, easy-to-listen-to material. But not entirely: Hamlet and King Lear offer moments of Shostakovich the gritty symphonist, and there’s a lot more to The Gadfly than just the famous “Romance”. Serebrier is simply one of the best conductors around today—for a musical journeyman, you can almost always count on him to deliver compelling results with any orchestra he happens to work with, and these performances have plenty of color, drive, and energy.

The engineering may not be quite as vivid as today’s best, but by any standard it’s perfectly

I suspect that for many listeners this three-disc set of suites (only King Lear is billed as complete, but it’s a brief score anyway) will offer more than enough of this side of Shostakovich’s creative output.
