Thank God for Ramey and Upshaw May 17, 2013

"This is a poor Rake's Progress all around, except for the work of Sam Ramey and Dawn Upshaw, who are phenomenal. Blame the sloppy work of Nagano and the completely imprecise singing of Hadley, who is fantastic in his rep but very uncomfortable in the quasi-leggiero and supremely Baroque role of Rakewell. He is too big and too Romantic for this. Look for the Chailly, or even better, the Stravinsky recording. This is one to skip."
