Julian Bream! Must Have! January 3, 2014 By Eric Ramirez (Placerville, CA) See All My Reviews "It is with a special sense of warmth and pleasure that I highly recommend: Julian Bream: My Favorite Albums. These are the guitar albums that I grew up with and I remember how excited I would get when, after saving up my pennies, I would go out and buy and then come home with the latest Bream record and proceed to play it until it was scratchy and hoarse! That same excitement has not waned after all these years--and what a treat to see these records reissued in the same jackets as in those days! What memories these bring back. Of course, I was already familiar with Segovia. But Julian Bream had his own beautiful and full-blooded way of playing the guitar. The intensity of his playing and the excitement that it generated were simply amazing (especially when heard live; but the astounding thing about Bream is that this same energy comes across in his recordings as well). Additionally, he greatly expanded the guitar repertoire by having so many new (at the time) works commissioned for the instrument, such as Benjamin Britten's Courtly Dances, from Gloriana as well as his hauntingly lovely Nocturnal, Op. 70. Highlights: Bream's 20th Century Guitar; his Julian and John album; but the rest are all equally wonderful. There are many young and excellent classical guitarists playing on the world's concert stages these days. But, dare I say it?--there are no more Julian Breams. He is one of a kind and he played the instrument with a spirit that transcended mere technique (which he had in spades). These great recordings are a testament to that fact." Report Abuse
