Notes and Editorial Reviews

"Helen Huang is no china doll: the fingers are terrific, as is her natural talent for the piano, and her response to these concertos is absolutely on the ball. It is limited, of course, and some bar-by-bar phrasing reveals her immaturity, particularly in the Mozart, as does the absence of the kind of light and shade generated by an understanding of how the music moves harmonically. But she's not the only pianist on disc to be shown up by the second subject of the first movement of the A major Concerto. The opening of the finale is wondrously fresh and joyous, as if she had touched the very spring of its inspiration. If you've ever noted the special pleasure to be had from hearing very gifted young players in Mozart, I think you will be Read more glad to hear this performance.

The Beethoven, too, is buoyant, clean and untrammelled, conveying the enjoyment of a young player's first discovery of a piece which is all the better, surely, for sounding youthful. Helen Huang is alive to the beauties of its surface and in her astonishing projection of the first-movement cadenza — the 'big' one, the longest of the three — she puts down a marker for the future."
