And sure enough, its woody tones - in the hands of Christian Benda, Ludovic Kanta, Vytautus Sondeckis, Maria Kliegel and Alexander Rubin - draw a melancholy veil over gorgeous slow movements from concertos by Haydn and Stamitz, Elgar and Dvorak, and arrangements of popular classics such as Rubinstein's famous Melodie and Rachmaninov's Vocalise. Things go upbeat for a moment in Rimsky Korsakov's Flight of the Bumble-Bee, but other than that, it's a clear case of soothing the senses."
