Notes and Editorial Reviews
Laurence Lesser, pupil of Gregor Piatigorsky and Gaspar Cassado, and former President of the New England Conservatory, joins forces with pianist HaeSun Paik, winner of top prizes at the Leeds, Tchaikovsky, William Kappell, & Queen Elisabeth (Belgium) competitions, in performances of Beethoven's complete music for Cello and Piano.
The performances were recorded in 2009 in the acoustically superb Jordan Hall (Boston). Included with the double-CD set is a DVD featuring the artists in 2009 concerts from Kumho Art Hall (Seoul, South Korea), biographical material, and a discussion of Beethoven's compositions for cello and piano.
Includes DVD: "Behind Beethoven's Music for Cello and Piano"
"Exceptional...Lesser and Paik combine Classical grace with precision and play as a true partnership... vibrantly alive" --The Strad Magazine
"The stars that watch over recording events could not have been more propitious. The sets of variations draw fine displays of virtuosity from both players. Disc 1 includes Op. 5 Sonatas in cohesive, dramatic and virtuosic performances...You will learn more about sonata form in a few minutes (on the bonus DVD) than you would believe possible. Lesser's analysis of the way Op. 102, No. 1 begins, backed up by his superb handling of this moment in his performance with Paik, is worth volumes in our understanding of Beethoven." --Atlanta Audio Society
