A SAVIOR FROM ON HIGH Martha Shaw, cond; Patrick Harvey (pn); Shorter Chorale ACA EM30007 (59:16 Text and Translation)

Choruses and arrangements by: WILLAN, MANZ, HANDEL, RUTTER, VICTORIA, BURT, PAULUS, BERLIOZ, LAURIDSEN, COURTNEY, HOGAN, PIERPONT, ANDERSON, GRUBER, and ANON

Well, it’s that time of year again, and to the appearance of yet another Christmas Read more recording there is no end. Pity that Easter and Pentecost always seem to get shortchanged. The Shorter Chorale refers not to the length of a German hymn but to the chorus of Shorter College (as of June 2010, Shorter University) in Rome, Georgia.

The repertoire here is standard college material for the season. These are good, conservative, choruses and arrangements of mostly traditional tunes and words. Even the newer pieces, by Stephen Paulus and Craig Courtney, don’t depart far from traditional techniques and words. There are no risks here, though it must be admitted that the sudden arrival of the piano for “And the Glory of the Lord,” from Messiah , was a bit of a jolt, but it works, and the tempo is quite up to modern practice.

On the evidence of this outing, the Shorter Chorale sings cleanly and mostly without strain. As with most college choirs, the men could use a few more mature voices. Martha Shaw has a good sense of phrasing, especially in Berlioz’s lullaby from L’Enfance du Christ . The choir can sing wonderfully softly, as is necessary in Morten Lauridsen’s O magnum mysterium , but can also pull off a convincing fortissimo when needed. All four parts are reasonably clear, as are the words, virtues not to be despised these days (though the Spanish of Ríu, Ríu, Chíu has more of Rome than Madrid in it). The recording itself is exemplary.
