Notes and Editorial Reviews

It's great to see this, the best recording of Martinu's two excellent cello concertos, back in print. Previously available only as a Denon/Supraphon co-production, it vanished years ago, only to be replaced in the catalog by the slightly droopy Wallfisch/Belohlávek on Chandos, and the slightly better but very hard to find Fukacová/Csaba on Kontrapunkt. Interestingly, May and Neumann take a bit longer than Wallfisch & Co. in the finale of No. 2, but as is usually the case with Martinu, it's all in the rhythm. This makes less difference in the perky First Concerto than in the Second, with its long, lyrical lines and big slow movement. In this work, particularly, Neumann's firm hand on the tiller and May's sharper edged, more emphatic attack Read more pay rich dividends, aided in no small degree by recorded sound far more vivid and immediate than Chandos'. So if you missed this excellent disc the first time around, now's your chance. Don't hesitate.
