Notes and Editorial Reviews

Soprano Maria Callas is considered by most opera lovers to be the preeminent prima donna of her day, perhaps even of the 20th century. A singer possessed of extraordinary musical abilities and high-voltage charisma, she was the quintessential diva, combining a distinctive voice with an electrifying dramatic presence, emotional intensity, exacting musicianship, and uncanny musical instincts. And while recordings can only do limited justice to her interpretive genius, this collection is an admirable testament to a unique and remarkable musical personality.
The disc includes well-known and essential interpretations from a variety of sources including the bel canto repertoire, French arias, the Puccini canon, and signature stage portrayals
Read more such as Norma and Tosca. It concludes with one of her finest performances, not often found on collections of this sort, a moving account of "Pace, pace mio Dio!" from Verdi's 'La Forza del Destino.' For those still largely unacquainted with the singular artistry of "La Divina," THE VERY BEST OF MARIA CALLAS is a well-packaged introduction to a legendary talent. Read less
