Notes and Editorial Reviews

The real thrill here is Maud Powell's performance (with an unnamed orchestra conducted by Josef A. Pasternack) of a potpourri from Puccini's La Bohème, recorded in June, 1917, and apparently never previously issued. Powell's vibrant, full-throated tone and superlative bow technique inform a performance of characteristic brilliance. The transfer, from an unpublished metal master, provides the most accurate sound document of Powell's playing to date; despite its vintage, distortion is minimal. Another useful find is the finale from the Mendelssohn Violin concerto (with piano) in a recording from 1909--a further reminder of the famous clarity and precision of Powell's playing.

As with earlier discs in this series,
Read more this one is primarily devoted to shorter encore pieces. Among these, of particular note are Powell's renditions of the Largo from Handel's Xerxes and of a beautiful transcription of Sibelius' Valse Triste. The remaining pieces, largely unknown today, bring playing of comparable eloquence and refinement, distinguished by attractive period touches such as generous glissandos and imaginative string voicings. Powell's vibrato was fairly minimal, so mannerisms never divert attention from the music itself. Inevitably, transfers vary widely in quality, but this latest compilation is no less fascinating than its predecessors. Highly recommended.
