Notes and Editorial Reviews

The catalogue is almost over-supplied with records coupling Respighi's Pines of Rome and Fountains of Rome. Maazel's and Karajan's are both superb in their different ways, although Ozawa's even more recent issue tends to sweep the hoard by providing, in addition, the finest available recording of Feste Romane. However this Jubilee reissue costs considerably less and because of Decca's remarkably high recording standards loses nothing on sonic grounds. Indeed the quality is still brilliantly demonstration-worthy with an epic scale in the climaxes and the most transluscent detail in the two symphonic poems. What makes this record in some ways even more attractive than Ozawa's is the inclusion of The Birds, showing the composer in his most Read more piquant neo-classical vein.. The music, taken from seventeenth- and eighteenth-century board pieces is enchanting and scored. with great taste. it is beautifully played and the sound has striking freshness and bloom. Kertesz is no less imaginative in the symphonic poems. The watery pictorialism of The Fountains is beautifully managed, with Neptune's heavenly procession from "The Trevi" given a resplendent grandeur. The central sections of The Pines are highly atmospheric and the only marginal disappointment is that the remorseless climax of the Roman Legions on the Appian Way has rather less menace than with Karajan, for instance. But the sense of spectacle remains and The Birds is a bonus not to be ignored.
