BACH Brandenburg Concertos Jordi Savall, cond; Le Concert des Nations ALIA VOX AVSA 9871 A+B (2 SACDs: 99:33)

If you are reading this magazine, you probably already have multiple versions of this music. If you are, shall we say, a more mature collector and have resisted Read more purchasing a set of the Brandenburg s in a period performance, this attractive budget production with excellent SACD sound, a rerelease of a 1992 recording, would be a fine place to jump on that bandwagon. Savall and his colleagues present rich, easygoing readings (no “sewing machine” Bach here) of depth and beauty. The artistry of the individual playing is at a very high level, leading to music-making that is thoroughly engrossing and even elegant. Fanfare ’s George Chien rates these performances at the very top, along with Pinnock and Gardiner.

While I would not call Savall’s readings “safe,” they do not quite have the swing of a more recent period-instrument recording, that of Richard Egarr conducting the Academy of Ancient Music from the harpsichord. Egarr and his splendid band (he has taken over the leadership from Christopher Hogwood) present the music with a combination of élan, erudition, and raucous joy that is thrilling. The happily braying natural horns are unique to my listening experience. These are not Brandenburg s for all tastes. There is an almost jazzy freedom here that borders on sloppiness (but never crosses into) that might make some listeners nervous. Those so inclined will not be disappointed by Savall and the suave and lovely Concert des Nations. I’m very happy to have both.

Pretty good Brandendburgs April 3, 2012 By Richard H. (Glendale, AZ) See All My Reviews "I agree with Mr. Burwasser for the most part. I do like the performance of these works by AAM much better. These are worth listening to as the interpretation is quite liberal. Maybe too liberal for most. I like them as an enjoyable departure from the traditional and mathematical JS Bach." Report Abuse
