Notes and Editorial Reviews

Yo-Yo Ma's playing has a characteristic rhythmic freedom and favours the widest range of dynamic. The improvisatory effect is seemingly spontaneous and these performances are very compelling indeed, for Ma seems right inside every bar of the music. The first-class recording is very real and natural...

Superb Performances May 28, 2017 By M. Bishop (Clackamas, OR) See All My Reviews "Yo-Yo Ma does an excellent job of playing Bach’s Cello Suites on this album. That is probably why he won his first of 18 Grammy awards for this album. The first cello suite is played with passion and artistic expertise; the fact that the playing here is unaccompanied brings out the unparalleled smoothness and the quality of the performances. The most significant component of the presentation here is the sound quality. The studio engineers bring out the full-bodied quality of sound and add a touch of reverberation, all done to make for a pleasant presentation. All said, I applaud the performances here and highly recommend this album to anyone seeking to secure a quality presentation of Bach’s unaccompanied cello suites." Report Abuse
I think one of the best...... September 10, 2013 By Reuven Holzer (Herzlia, Israel) See All My Reviews "Every descent Cellist record at list once the Bach Cello Suits. This I think became the "cello Business card". Personally, when it comes to Bach solo's and duo's I always found that I like American performers the best. I can't exactly put the finger on the reason. However, again and again I get to conclusion that the best performance I like is of an American performer. So, although Yo Yo Ma is tagged as Chinese, I see him more as american performer. So after all those words I just wanted to mention that I find his performance the best I like." Report Abuse
