Notes and Editorial Reviews

...remarkable... Ashkenazy gives a vivid performance.

-- Gramophone [12/1967, reviewing Pictures at an Exhibition]

-------------------

...a fantastic record on every count. Askhenazy may not have quite as uniquely personal a Lisztian style as—say Brendel or Arrau, but for transcendental virtuosity, allied to poetic imagination, his playing really takes your breath away. Once upon a time I always thought of his touch as bantam-weight. But Icelandic air and exercise seem to have toughened his muscles; now he has all the necessary heavy guns to fire as well as exquisite finger-tip delicacy. It would be interesting to know if any, or many, re-takes were involved to produce such a happy blend of accuracy
Read more and apparently spontaneous excitement in the bigger virtuoso studies. There are also many melting things in the course of more reflective numbers like "Paysage" and "Harmonies du soir".

-- Joan Chissell, Gramophone [10/1971, reviewing the Liszt works]
