Notes and Editorial Reviews

England has been unfairly disparaged as "a country without music" for failing to produce a world-beater, a Mozart, Beethoven or Verdi, but the British Isles have always been full of music-making, with great folk music traditions and, of course, no lack of good poets. Folksong and poetry, the cornerstones of English art song, are prominent in this survey of the field by sweet-voiced tenor Ian Bostridge. There are lovingly constructed arrangements of traditional tunes, such as Percy Grainger's haunting "Brigg Fair" or his stirring ballad "Bold William Taylor," while Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Linden Lea" is a conscious, if paradoxical, attempt to create an original folk song. One of the highlights of the program is a piece not well-known Read more outside of England, William Denis Browne's "To Gratiana Dancing and Singing." This breathtaking evocation of feminine grace from a Richard Lovelace poem is set as a rhapsodic, winding melody over a modernized treatment of a 17th century masque tune. In this work in particular, Bostridge and accompanist Julius Drake show the utmost sensitivity to the mood and scene painting of the song, a sensitivity which happily radiates throughout the entire disc.
