“I must tell you that some quartets have just appeared, composed by a certain Pleyel, a pupil of Joseph Haydn. If you do not know them, do try to get hold of them; you will find them worth the trouble. They are very well written and most pleasing to listen to,” Mozart (who rarely praised his contemporaries) wrote to his father in connection with Pleyel’s op. 1 Erdődy quartets in a letter dated 24 April 1784. Ignace Joseph Pleyel (1757–1831), just a year younger than Mozart, enjoyed a career of a modern nineteenth-century musician. He was an extremely prolific composer and, as the milestones in his career attest, he was no stranger to making radical career changes. His versatility and affinity for novelty was truly astonishing.
