Claudio Abbado conducts the Chorus and Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera in a powerful recording of Alban Berg's influential opera, Wozzeck, a terrifyingly great portrayal of a soldier who is tormented and mocked by his superiors until he loses reason.
Peter Mussbach's highly stylized production heightens the emotional intensity of this searing work and becomes an agonizing lament over lost innocence.

a classic WozzeckOctober 3, 2012By Renato L Baserga (Ardmore, PA)See All My Reviews"I knew this version of Wozzeck from the defunct laser disc, and after trying other Wozzek's, I decided I should return to the DVD version of it. It is still the best Wozzeck available in VIDEO. Beautifully done, modern (as Wozzeck should be) conducted in superb style by Claudio Abbado, with soloist like Hildegard Behrens and Grundheber (and the capatain of Zdenik...), this is a wolly satisfying version of the opera. No other version comes close to it."Report Abuse
