ROMANTIC STRING SOUNDS IN DRESDEN Wolfgang Hentrich, cond; PCO Dresden AURIS SUBTILIS 5037-2000 (69:42)

GRIEG Holberg Suite. SIBELIUS Andante festivo. DVO?ÁK Serenade for Strings. JANÁ?EK Suite for String Orchestra

There’s much to like about this Read more release. The program is a mix of the familiar—Grieg’s nostalgic homage to a departed era and Dvo?ák’s unalloyed distillation of sweetness—and the not-so-familiar—Janá?ek’s first orchestral composition and Sibelius’s last major work. The Grieg and the Dvo?ák, in fact, both were included on a Decca Eloquence disc favorably reviewed by yours truly for the last issue. Janá?ek’s suite is itself a tantalizing mix of familiar elements and hints of the restless and inventive individuality that were the trademark of his maturity. Sibelius’s Andante festivo dates from the period in which he was presumed to have been occupied with his ultimately unrealized Eighth Symphony. It’s a grave, serious piece, not exactly festive, but intensely moving. Originally composed for string quartet, it was recast for string orchestra, sometimes accompanied by timpani (not used here). It’s apparently quite popular in Finland but not so much so elsewhere. Its brevity (4 1/2 minutes) undoubtedly mitigates against its being programmed regularly. The performances are wonderfully (and appropriately) romantic and expressive. I’ve always had some reservations about the Dvo?ák, but Hentrich has helped to convince me that there have never been any artificial sweeteners hidden in its singular recipe. The recording is especially well balanced, giving the inner voices unusual (and welcome) prominence. Overall, a most enjoyable disc.
