This disc was nominated for the 2000 Gramophone magazine award for "Best Early Music Recording."
In the late 16th century, the man whom most Spaniards considered to be "the most outstanding in his time, in the Art of Music" is a composer now known to too few people-Francisco Guerrero. Guerrero's music represents the highest achievements of the Spanish Renaissance. In the age of Palestrina, Lassus, Byrd, and Victoria, Guerrero wrote cosmopolitan high polyphony that retains an individual stamp, especially in his expressive use of vocal register. Ample evidence of Guerrero's skill is found in this present recording, which attempts to recreate the Requiem Mass and Burial Service that was celebrated in Seville's great
