immediately conveys the concept of this CD—all of the songs are settings of texts by Russia’s greatest poet, by an array of composers both famous and obscure. This review does not need to be lengthy; quite simply, grab this splendid disc while you can. It offers one lovely song after another, superbly rendered by the greatest baritone—indeed, greatest male singer—produced since Pavel Lisitsian by the various states comprising the now defunct USSR. Dmitri Hvorostovsky is in glorious voice, ably supported by his accompanist, and well recorded (if rather closely miked). The only drawback is the rather short disc timing. Complete texts are provided in English and transliterated Russian. Enthusiastically recommended.
