Notes and Editorial Reviews

"...Christian Zacharias, when he partnered the Cherubini Quartet for this recording of Schumann’s masterful Piano Quintet, has since become one of my favorite pianists... Zacharias and the Cherubini Quartet make for a splendid match. Schumann’s first movement Allegro brilliante, with repeat, dazzles, as it should. And the finale, a masterful example of recalling and recombining ideas from all three preceding movements—much in the manner of the composer’s Fourth Symphony—is played with real panache... Of the string quartets, Fanfare’s Peter J. Rabinowitz posed the question...'Can there be a cycle of string quartets of this intellectual caliber and emotional depth that’s so routinely ignored?' ...I cannot tell you what has become of the Read more Cherubini Quartet, but with playing like this, it would be a shame if it has disbanded. With performances like these, it’s not hard for me to come around to Rabinowitz’s contention that Schumann’s string quartets are unjustly neglected. Strongly recommended."
-- Jerry Dubins, FANFARE [reviewing the Piano Quintet and String Quartets, EMI 50819]

"These are stormy, full-blooded performances of Schumann. The young Norwegian trio gives the D minor all the dark urgency of a late Brahms work. In the sunnier, beautifully shaped F major, it is again unafraid to push its expressiveness to the limits... Compared with a classic recording, such as the Thibaud-Cortot-Casals, the tempi are swift. This can make for a congested sound when all are playing at full tilt, as in the F major finale, but there are places when speed is apt, such as the buoyant last movement of the D minor, ‘mit Feuer’ (with fire) as it says, but here also with love. In the F major slow movement, the Grieg shows another face: tender, unstrained, gracious."
-- Helen Wallace, BBC Magazine [reviewing the Piano Trios, Virgin 61442]

"[In] the Märchenbilder,...Nobuko Imai's low viola strings sing with ample, cello-like richness and her agile bow arm makes child's play of the third piece's lightning arpeggiated patterns. It's interesting to compare Argerich and Mischa Maisky's recent DG recording of Schumann's Fantasiestücke to this EMI version with the pianist and Natalia Gutman. Both readings incorporate a wide range of tempo fluctuation, yet I find the Argerich/Gutman team more fluent, conversational, and heartfelt. No Schumann lover (or Argerich fan, needless to say) should be without this incredible disc."
