Ilan Volkov's first disc of the less-usual Stravinsky ballets was excellent, and so is this one. It's only next to the almost insane precision of the Knussen/Cleveland version for DG that this one might seem a touch wanting, but you'd have to be pretty picky to care, and the coupling here is arguably more apt (Knussen has Faun and Shepherdess, and Ode). The BBC Scottish Symphony plays both works with elegance and panache. Solo winds relish their many opportunities to shine, and rhythms, particularly in Scènes de ballet, are appropriately clean without ever turning dry.

The Fairy's Kiss, based on Tchaikovsky, is a tricky piece to play well; you need to capture
Read more something of the older Russian composer's lyrical juice while remaining mindful of the younger man's emotional coolness and ironic sense of distance. Volkov walks the tightrope very well; the music sings and flows, but never wallows. Fine sonics complement the performances, making this release easily recommendable.
