The singers provide a sequence of committed and convincing performances, with Paul Elliott and Andrew King turning in a notably virtuosic and breathtaking account of Mentre vaga Angioletta.

The eye-catching title of this record, underlined by a carefully-selected moment from Titian's famous painting of Venus and the Luteplayer on the cover of the accompanying booklet, should not obscure the fact that most of these pieces are taken from Monteverdi's path-breaking Seventh Book of Madrigals. Its title, Concerto, indicates that its contents require instrumental accompaniment, and most of them are written for only two, three of four solo voices with continuo.
