Notes and Editorial Reviews

I was quite bowled over by the first part of the new Decca Creation. I agree with RF that Lucia Popp sings Gabriel "divinely". The orchestra play like angels, too, the contribution of the principal flautist is particularly enchanting, and the accompaniment to "On mighty pens" is ravishingly done. The recording, too, is astonishing, wonderfully spacious with the most natural bloom on the solo voices, so that at times one thinks oneself listening to a master tape rather than a cassette, such is the depth and freedom of the acoustic. It must be said that the chorus is not quite as crisply focused as the solo vocal recording, but it is still extremely good. I can agree with RF that Helena Dose, who sings Eve (warmly and Read more lyrically), does not convey the same magic as Miss Popp, but Dorati does maintain much of the honeyed spontaneity, which so distinguishes Part 1, in the work's closing section. Undoubtedly this is still a very enjoyable set of a masterpiece of the highest order.
