Notes and Editorial Reviews

"It is astonishing what a contrast there is between Solti's recordings of the same symphony with the same orchestra only 12 years apart, the one version done in 1975, the other in 1987. In all four movements he is faster this time, remarkably so in the finale. Along with that the new performance conveys not just extra urgency but a sense of spontaneity missing from the disappointingly stolid 1975 performance, which managed to be both too rigid and at times too fierce. There is some fine playing and the recorded sound is hardly less impressive than on the new issue, more immediate and brightly lit. The sound on the new one, recorded not in the Medinah Temple but at Symphony Hall, Chicago, is not ideally clear in inner detail and lacks a Read more little in presence, but plainly it captures Solti at white heat not in fierce but in exuberant mood. Strikingly in the first movement the 6/8 rhythms convey joyful energy rather than any emotion more ominous. The passion is both more natural and more intense than before in the great climaxes of the slow movement, even though Jansons on Chandos, for example, is even warmer. In the third movement waltz the new Solti performance, only fractionally faster, is also lighter and more elegant than before. The finale, as I said, brings the sharpest contrasts, with speeds markedly less slow both in the introduction and in the main Allegro vivace. In both, it is the new performance that communicates much more warmly and immediately, evidently the product of an exceptionally happy session.

The recorded sound prevents me from ranking this new Solti version among the very finest, but it will delight any admirer of the conductor and the orchestra, both at their peak. The coupling is generous too, and remember that few of the earlier full-price versions have any coupling at all. The Swan Lake suite was recorded a year after the symphony, and again the performance has a winning spontaneity. By then the engineers may have learnt to cope better with the acoustic problems of Symphony Hall or else the lighter scoring helped, but the results are more vivid with more presence, even though the perspective is still limited..."
