Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Brodsky String Quartet has worked the middle of the crossover field better and more convincingly than most, not just dabbling with arrangements of pop tunes but getting involved in ambitious projects such as the song cycle 'The Juliet Letters' with pop star Elvis Costello. Indeed, "I Almost Had A Weakness," an arch, stingingly sarcastic ditty co-written by Costello and first violinist Michael Thomas, is one of the real highlights of this disc, sounding perfectly natural in its classically strung garb. Icelandic pop singer Björk also makes an impressive appearance, her inimitably inflected voice scaling modal peaks over a ground bass in her "Hyperballad." Elsewhere, the fare is more of the standard light-classical variety, arrangements Read more of Debussy, Prokofiev and Falla, as well as Gershwin and Brubeck, most of it ranging between winsome and playful, all served up with care and obvious affection by the Brodskys.
