Notes and Editorial Reviews

Rimsky-Korsakov’s music is often criticised for a lack of depth, but so entrancing is its surface that it seems ungrateful to ask that there should be anything beneath... Much of [it] is fairy-tale music – but what fairy tales these are, and what music! Ernest Ansermet was best known for his interpretation of composers influenced by Rimsky (Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky), yet shows an equal aptitude for their source. Variable sound, but nothing to be ashamed of.

Perfect recording and terrific service!!! January 3, 2013 By dr joseph p m. (pueblo, CO) See All My Reviews "Back in the late 60s I owned the original Decca LP. It became worn out about ten years later. I am an Englishman, and finding a replacement proved to be impossible in Europe, or even in the USA when I moved here in 1991. I have never heard a better rendering of the piece than the LSO/Monteux recording, so you can imagine my absolute delight when ArkivMusic had a copy of this very recording available as a CD. I ordered the CD and, as usual, Arkiv gave superlative service, which is why I always go to them for any and all of my classical music needs. Many thanks, Arkiv. Dr. J. Paul Massam." Report Abuse
