Notes and Editorial Reviews

French and Russian art have always been very closely connected. Vocal art is no exception and it is very characteristic that Ottmar Rutz, who established the famous "Typenlehre", has put French and Russian singers in the same category. The tenor, Joseph Rogatchewsky, is one of the most convincing examples of this theory. Of Russian birth he lived to become a glorious representative of the French operatic art - by many he was even considered to be the greatest "French" tenor of his era. In May, 1928, Otto Iro, the famous singing teacher and voice analyst, reviewed a series of guest performances of the Opera Comique in Vienna. Rogatchewsky was heard in Werther. Here is part of what the critic wrote. "Even on French ground beautiful voices Read more such as his, do not seem to flourish. Simply the ideal of a lyric tenor voice. One searches in vain for words to express the sweetness in his singing and the effect of his caressing and enchanting timbre. Few German tenors nowadays can match Rogatchewsky's vocal beauty and natural stage appearance." Read less
