Notes and Editorial Reviews

"These are brisk performances, with very fast tempos in the Concerto No. 1. Indeed, Poppen and Rilling are considerably faster than Oscar Shumsky on Nimbus, and Shumsky, a favorite of mine, is himself no slowpoke in this music. The Concerto No. 2 and Double Concerto are also fast, although not so remarkably fast. The performances use modernized instruments but with something of the light tone and glancing articulation of some period-instrument players. Ends of movements in particular conclude in a way very much like the modern informed-practice consensus: The conclusion is not telegraphed measures ahead of time, and the slightly lifted pause before the final note is not exaggerated. Only the vibrato, some bite to entrances, and a touch Read more of Romantic expression at big moments give away the modern-instrument player. One such key moment is in the slow movement to the A-Minor Concerto, in which the music ascends to a cathartic high note. Nathan Milstein had a way of giving that destination note more juice by momentarily stopping the vibrato, and so does Poppen. Poppen and Faust give a nicely agile, conversational Double Concerto, with a really exciting third movement. So, in short, alert and pleasant performances, and well recorded."
