Notes and Editorial Reviews

Kurt Schwaen was born on June 21, 1909 in Kattowice (Upper Silesia). In school he distinguished himself as a pianist and musical improviser. He took organ and piano lessons from Max Lubrich, a pupil of Max Reger, who also encouraged him to compose on his own. From 1929-1933 he studied musicology, German philology, art history and philosophy at Breslau and Berlin universities. In 1935, he was imprisoned because of illegal political activities. After being released he worked as a repetiteur in the field of dance. Towards the end of World War II he was called up to the Penal Division 999. During the years of German reconstruction, Schwaen, who lived in the eastern part of Germany, was involved in setting up music schools, then an important Read more cultural-political task, and was musical adviser to the Berlin Theater Deutsche Volksbuhne. His friendship with Brecht at the Berliner Ensemble from 1953-1965 had a great influence on Schwaen as an artist. Since 1953, he has been a free lance composer. To date, he has composed over 600 compositions and was one of the most important East German composers. Read less
