Here is a fascinating new recording of chamber music by trumpet virtuoso Wynton Marsalis. Marsalis has made a brilliant career in the worlds of jazz and classical music and he is a first rate composer. 'At the Octoroon Balls' is the sub-title for Marsalis's String Quartet no. 1. The piece is a seven movement long meditation on race and music in America. The opening movement is entitled "Come Long Fiddler" and is a throbbing country-dance, brilliantly played by the Orion String Quartet's first violinist Daniel Phillips. The second movement, sub-titled "Mating Calls & Delta Rhythms," is moody and sultry. Creole, Ragtime, and Blues rhythms infuse the remainder of this provocative work.
'A Fiddler's Fairy Tale Suite' is an instrumental piece
Read more for seven instruments drawn from Marsalis's larger work. 'A Fiddler's Fairy Tale' was commissioned by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and this recording features performers from that august ensemble.
