Stops and Starts April 4, 2018 By Barron H. (AUSTIN, TX) See All My Reviews "Maazel seemed to get lost and let his mind wander, at least that is how I perceive things, especially in the first movement. The recording and, of course, the orchestra, are first rate. Maazel does get cooking in the fourth movement. I think most folks agree this Mahler cycle was a mixed bag with mostly duds. Which is a total shame, because when the VPO is involved and so beautifully captured in all the glory of their Musikverein glow by Stephen Epstein of CBS/Sony, you want the interpretation to be spot on. The 4th Symphony with a glorious Kathleen Battle is another story. All the music gods and planets were aligned for that one. It is the lone precious gem in an otherwise collection of costume jewelry." Report Abuse
