Notes and Editorial Reviews

How to describe the voice of Giovanni Inghilleri? It is a well-focused, bright baritone, even if a little limited in volume, with an easy, penetrating top and a relatively pale low range. When forcing too much his somewhat narrow voice production now and then tended to become susceptible to little "cracks." Although his recordings do not lack "veristic lapses" his portrayals are highly imaginative. He adds a scenic dimension to his interpretations, his diction (praised by both Rodolfo Celletti and Alan Blyth) is exemplary and his musicianship reveals his thorough training as a pianist. It can clearly be heard from these recordings why he was not singing in the "big leagues" but was rather a first-rate second-class singer among the Read more incredible richness of Italian baritone voices of his day. On record it is probably the legendary HMV Aida recording from 1928 with Dusolina Giannini and Aureliano Pertile with which his name is most closely associated. In 1952, 24 years later, he returned to the recording studio for two more complete opera recordings of La Boheme and Madame Butterfly for DECCA with the young Renata Tebaldi. Read less
