MONTEVERDI Su le penne. Confitebor II. Iste confessor II. Laudate Dominum IV. Confitebor V. Confitebor III alla francese. Ab aeterno. Nisi Dominus I. Deus tuorum militum II Roy Goodman, Peter Holman, dirs; Parley of Instruments; Emma Kirkby (sop); Ian Partridge (ten); David Thomas (bs) HELIOS CDH 55345 (43:11 Text and Translation)

This first arrived as an LP ( Fanfare 5:3), then as a CD (9:2). A remastered CD appeared in 2001, and now we have the fourth iteration of this collection that is titled “sacred vocal music.” It is drawn mostly from the 1641 and 1651 collections of sacred music, but it falls between the poles of the systematic traversal of either book and the systematic (in a different way) grouping of a selection of pieces that would be used for a celebration of Vespers, for which most of them were written. One piece worth singling out now is the opening item, a first recording at the time and still, if I recall correctly, the only one ever made. It is interesting in its origin. The local poet G. B. Andreini, whose wife sang first performances of Monteverdi’s music in 1608, composed a sacred dramatic work, La Maddalena , in 1617 with music by several composers; Monteverdi’s prologue is heard here, but standing alone the brief piece is almost inconsequential. The three vocal soloists were outstanding stars of early music at the time, and each has at least one solo (David Thomas has three), in addition to a duet and three trios. The disc still has value for the excellent work of the soloists.
