Notes and Editorial Reviews

Music for Shakespeare is a tricky business, one in which William Walton specialized. The British composer wrote 14 film scores, including three Shakespearean collaborations with Laurence Olivier. 'As You Like It' was originally composed in 1936 as a feature-length score, and Walton's score for Olivier's 1948 film version of HAMLET was written a year before the film's release. The two are presented here in single-movement suites arranged by Christopher Palmer in 1989. In both, Walton avoids the pitfall of tying the musical styles to that of any particular age of music (with minor exceptions, as with the minuet introduced in 'As You Like It'), making these compositions timeless companions to Shakespeare's masterpieces of theater.
