The Great Performances from The Library of Congress series continues with this double-disc collection of vintage recordings by the Budapest String Quartet. The Quartet's career spanned the 1930s to the early 1960s, but many musicologists tend to feel the group's best years were the 1940s--the years documented in this collection. Despite the fact that the sound of these monaural CDs can't compare to modern-day recordings, they still hold up remarkably well.
The Clarinet Quintet is a work that the group recorded three times (once with Benny Goodman!), but the recording here with the Belgian clarinetist Gustave Langenus is perhaps the most supple and relaxed of the three. The A-major string quartet is one of Mozart's best; the first
Read more movement utilizes a "question and answer" style of development that, as many lovers of Mozart know, the composer utilized to great effect in 'The Magic Flute.' The D-minor quartet reveals a slightly melancholic mood right from the outset, a tone that pervades the entire work. By contrast, the piano quartet in E-flat major is one of the sunniest and happiest pieces Mozart ever wrote--that is, after the sublime E-flat major Divertimento. Read less
