This second duo-guitar recital by the brothers Assad again brings us more music which might be termed—and even dismissed as—popular Brazilian music in some quarters of gringoland, but which readily earns the appelation “classical“ when truly listened to with an ear to the roots from which it springs. From the relatively early Villa-Lobos (the pioneer, of course) to the pieces by Sergio Assad himself, this is infectious stuff absolutely at home with the guitar, and the Assads play it excellently well. Note that the composer-guitarist entitles one of his pieces a “Jobiniana“; in so connecting the works of the bassa-nova writer with that of Villa-Lobos' Bach, he manages to make his own quiet statement about the nature of the Brazilian soul: itRead more is frank; open; itself.
