Notes and Editorial Reviews

Gramophone reviews of some of the original recordings that make up this set.

Orgel-Büchlein

"This is Simon Preston's second Bach recording from Sorer Abbey and I, for one, could not be more delighted. It's an instrument I can never tire of hearing, especially when recorded as well as this...Preston's performances are thoroughly rewarding. The clarity of detail, as in the bubbly Herr Gott, der ein'ge Gottes Sohn is exemplary and the wonderful ease with which the melodic lines in the more reflective preludes, like Wenn wir in hlichsten Noten sein, unfold is sheer joy to hear...This is an outstanding performance of the Orgelbiichlein enhanced by a first-rate recording."

"There is no doubt that [Simon Preston] ranks as one of the great organ virtuosos of our time, and with his technical bravado and wonderfully incisive feel for rhythm Preston gives us some of the most exciting and rewarding accounts of these works ever recorded... Intelligent choice of instrument is one thing, but add to this Preston’s sizzling fingerwork and unfailingly apt choice of tempo, and every one of these large works (and many of the smaller ones) is transformed into something truly memorable. My personal favourites include: BWV564 – which, after an arresting opening flourish, commands our undivided attention through its erupting and cascading showers of notes; a beautifully lyrical adagio and a wonderfully ebullient Fugue – BWV542 – where he cleverly avoids any hint of pomposity in an otherwise statuesque account of the Fantasia on the full-blooded Sauer organ of St Peter’s Church, Waltrop); and best of all, the breathtakingly powerful sense of drive throughout the entire 14 minutes of the Passacaglia and Fugue, BWV582."

Chorale Partitas

"His playing here is at its very best; and Simon Preston's best in Bach is truly formidable.

The organ (a 1627 Lorentz, reconstructed by Marcussen) makes some delightful sounds. At heart it's a most gentle creature and Preston reveals to us some of its charms with registrations planned with exemplary care and very little repetition. We encounter a captivating reed, as delicate as the finest porcelain miniature (Var. 3 of O Gott, du frommer Gott), the purest of flutes lovingly embraced by a subtle tremulant (Var. 8 of the same work) and a whole host of simply magical colours. Frequent use of 16-foot manual stops compensates for the lack of pedals in most of these variations (perhaps in Ach, was soll ich Sunder machen? this does produce a little too much deadweight). Only in the final variation of Sei gegrusset do we encounter full organ; a sound as stirring and red-blooded as any organ could hope to muster.

Such a concentration on small sounds as well as a wide overall dynamic range has certainly tested the DG engineers' skills. But they have achieved an outstanding result; a model of organ recording, clearly focused organ sound with an ideal acoustic backdrop. I found a slight upward adjustment of the volume control revealed some particularly vivid results but at normal levels even the softest stops could be heard with impressive clarity."
