Legato Personnified October 26, 2012 By Basil De Pinto (Piedmont, CA) See All My Reviews "Of the many great baritones of the pure Italian tradition - Ruffo, Granforte, Stracciari, among others - surely Giuseppe Taddei must stand out for one particular quality of the vocal artist: his mastery of the technique of legato singing. To bind each phrase of a melody so that it meshes seamlessly with the next, and yet make a meaningful whole of the entire passage is an ideal that is often attempted but rarely accomplished with the persuasiveness that is Taddei's inimitable gift. On this disc one need only listen to the matchless rendition of Vien, Leonora - from the belcanto period, and then listen to Eri tu - from the dark-hued drama of Verdi. This is singing of a perfection that can hardly be heard anywhere today. It is not merely natural beauty of tone that comes through, but also the power to project dramatic meaning through the combination of linguistic ease and musical sensibility: dramma per musica. The liner notes are sadly lacking recording dates; one can only assume that most selections were made in the 40's and 50's when Taddei was in his artistic and vocal prime." Report Abuse
