VERWANDLUNG: LIEDER EINES JAHRES Christiane Karg (sop); Burkhard Kehring (pn) BERLIN 0016222BC (59:03 Text and Translation)

Songs by BERG, BRAHMS, EISLER, LIGETI, MAHLER, MARX, MENDELSSOHN, PFITZNER, REGER, SCHREKER, SCHUBERT, C. SCHUMANN, R. SCHUMANN, R. STRAUSS, WEBERN, WOLF, ZEMLINSKY

This disc is an exceptionally well conceived “concept album.” The premise seems almost embarrassingly obvious—a traversal of the four seasons Read more of the year (spring, summer, autumn, winter—the same sequence used by Vivaldi), and human reflections upon and reactions to them. The trick is to make an intelligent selection of songs that fit together both thematically in terms of texts and stylistically in terms of music, so that the result is not simply a hodgepodge. In that endeavor, soprano Christiane Karg and her accompanist, Burkhard Kehring, have succeeded brilliantly. The songs succeed one another with such naturalness that, despite the great disparity of compositional styles from Schubert to Ligeti, one could almost be fooled into mistaking this for a cycle by a single composer.

Of course, none of this would work if the performance were not on an equally high plane, and thankfully it is. This is Karg’s first solo recital album; an up-and-coming singer, she was recently named “Young Female Artist of the Year” by Opernwelt magazine. She has previously appeared in a DVD of Mozart’s Apollo et Hyacinthus and Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebot s, and a CD of Mendelssohn’s “Lobgesang” Symphony (reviewed and highly praised by Steven E. Ritter in Fanfare 32:6); a DVD of Hans Pfitzner’s Palestrina is just now being issued in which she sings the role of Ighino. Her voice is a lyric soprano of medium weight, with a bright rather than sweet timbre and a bit of edge and bite in the very top notes. Her vibrato is steady and judiciously employed; sometimes she will deliberately start a note with a “white” vibratoless tone and then let the vibrato emerge. Her diction is clear, and she artfully shades her tone and emphasis to fit her texts. Kehring is everything an accompanist should be—an equal partner, totally supportive of and in sync with Karg, with a wonderfully shaded palette of keyboard touch and tone colors. The recorded sound is excellent; complete dual-language texts are provided. This is a singer to watch out for and hear; highly recommended.
