Anne Sofie Von Otter's long-awaited go at Schubert concentrates largely on the late songs. Her recital is a nice mix of familiar and unfamiliar songs--since Schubert wrote well over six hundred songs any recital is going to be the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Among the more familiar items are "Heidenröslein," "Im Frühling," and the third of Ellen's songs from 'The Lady of the Lake,' the ubiquitous "Ave Maria." She also includes the long flower ballad, "Viola," and the very late "Ständchen" with the ladies of the Swedish Radio Chorus.
Von Otter proves to be a comparatively ornate Schubert singer, something not to be expected from her other work in German song. At relatively brisk tempos, she inflects both words and music in a moment
