Notes and Editorial Reviews

Eduard Franck was the son of a banker. His eldest brother, Hermann, made his name as a musicologist. He was friends with Goethe, Heine and Wagner who especially appreciated him as a stimulating conversationalist and a benevolent critic of his works. His younger brother, Albert, owned a bookshop in Paris where he was a friend of Chopin. From 1834 to 1838 Eduard studied in Dusseldorf and Leipzig. He was one of the few students who studied privately with Mendelssohn who really appreciated his young pupil as a pianist. They often performed together in public. Franck's Opus 1, published in 1837 was dedicated to Mendelssohn "with great respect." Until 1841, Franck lived in Breslau where he became friends of Robert Schumann and William Read more Sterndale-Bennett. From 1841 to 1855, he lived in London, Paris and Rome. He then went to Cologne and Berlin. He had great success as a pianist interpreting his own works as well as the works of his other composer friends. In 1859 he became head of the Bern Conservatory and in 1867 he moved back to Berlin where he remained until he died in 1893. The Violin Concerto was premiered in Cologne in 1855. Ferdinand Hiller conducted the orchestra. After the performance Ferdinand David who had advised Mendelssohn on the violin part of his own concerto, suggested revisions to Franck. These were made and the revised version, heard on this recording was first performed in Cologne on March 5, 1861. The Symphony was composed earlier than the Violin Concerto but was only published in 1882. It was performed twice but without much success. Read less
