AN ALMOST PERFECT MODERN RECORDING OF A SLIGHTED  November 26, 2012 By S. FLANIGIN (BETTENDORF, IA) See All My Reviews "Atterberg's Symphony No. 6, disdainfully labeled "The Dollar Symphony", has yet to have a truly great modern recording. The ancient Beecham is good, but unidiomatic. The Toscanini broadcast performance is thrilling, but has the limitations of acetate transcription technology. The Ari Rasilainen performance has good sound, but the first movement is very slow and the second movement is too fast. This performance with the Norrkoping Symphony Orchestra under Hirokami is very good. Tempos are almost ideal and the interpretation captures the spirit of Atterberg's Northern land. What detracts slightly from this performance is the recording itself. While the early digital sound is great for dynamics, the miking has left the strings hanging outboard of the brass and woodwinds, almost like an audio catamaran. The violins, violas, and cellos are there all right, but they are too distantly recorded. Still, this recording is the best available of this tuneful work" Report Abuse
