In the 1930s, when American composers were really beginning to develop a national sound, Roy Harris' pupil William Schuman emerged as perhaps the first important native-born composer to have been mentored by another. Schuman's style owes much to his teacher's earnest Americanism, yet is individually distinctive and, in a word, more urban: if Harris' music stands in front of a Frank Lloyd Wright prairie house, Schuman's looks from the window of a New York skyscraper.
Schuman wrote scores for two Martha Graham dances, 'Judith' and 'Night Journey,' 'Judith' is one of his better works, an austere and darkly dramatic symphonic poem as befits this story of the Israelite heroine who seduces and slays a despot, taken from the Biblical
Read more Apocrypha. The earlier 'Night Journey' accompanied a telling of the Oedipus myth from Jocasta's viewpoint, the music was arranged for the Endymion Ensemble in 1981. 'In Sweet Music,' a Shakespeare setting for soprano, flute, viola and harp was composed in 1979 for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
