Notes and Editorial Reviews

In early 1786, Mozart was in the midst of a furiously prolific run, during which he wrote some of his most outstanding work. In particular, the piano concertos written during these months (he wrote 12 in the short span of two years) stand out. In this recording, pianist Richard Goode and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra perform two very different concertos, each with remarkable beauty.
Despite the common threads of Mozart's trademark energy and playfulness, these pieces are quite dissimilar. The Concerto in A major is lyrically cheerful, with a euphony of strings creating sweeping backdrops to clarinets, bassoons and a single flute. Goode's piano dances through the scenes, lighthearted and joyous.
By comparison, the Concerto in C minor
Read more is a melancholy affair. From its dramatic opening onward, it evokes more dire circumstances. While minor keys are by nature more melodramatic, the curt music and instrumentation relying more heavily on horns and timpany gives the piece a dark, almost menacing, color.
Goode's performance on these pieces is outstanding, as is the work of the orchestra. Recorded more softly than many soloists, Goode's piano resists the temptation to stand out in front of the other musicians, blending nicely with the orchestra. Read less
