The sonatas of Opp. 109, 110, and 111 of Beethoven are among the most creative and interpretatively difficult of his piano works. Composed following the darkest period in his life, they represent a return to creative production for Beethoven (written starting in 1822, they encompass the same period as the 'Missa Solemnis'). Appearing also in this span are the 'Diabelli' Variations, a work which exceeded the usual expectations for variations, and found new compositional depth that became the model for later masterworks such as Schumann's Symphonic Etudes.
The performance of pianist Jean-François Heisser here is broad and comprehensive. Heisser displays a respect for the material and its adaptability, while pursuing its depth in a definite
