Notes and Editorial Reviews

Concert music for the organ is an elusive idea, in that most organs have been built for a specific church. But when a composer such as César Franck is able to bridge that gap, with an organist such as Alan Morrison performing, the results can be singular and compelling. The first of 'Trois Pièces', the "Fantasie in A" is ethereal in a way only the organ could pass muster, with sliding parallel harmonies and original sonorities, a real marriage of idiom and music. A quiet virtuoso, Morrison masters the organ-unique elements of Bach's C minor Passacaglia: pedal themes and fugues whose mechanics are the expression themselves, achieving the stirring climax in a brilliant mix of sonorities and colors, an effect ahead of its time.
