Notes and Editorial Reviews

This recording under the title "Bitter Love" is adapted from music that was composed for the opera "Peony Pavillion."
Selections recorded October 26-28 and November 10-11, 1998 and January 29,
1999 at The Hit Factory, Avatar Studios, and Sony Music Studios, New York
Composer Tan Dun draws from his opera THE PEONY PAVILION for this dramatic musical piece, featuring soprano Ying Huang, pipa virtuoso Min Xiao-Fen and composer/improvisor/reed-player Joseph Celli. Sung in Chinese and English and performed with an array of both traditional Chinese and contemporary acoustic/electronic instrumentation, BITTER LOVE runs an amazing gamut of styles and moods. "I Once Dreamed" juxtaposes a Gregorian-like chorus, spare, punchy
Read more percussion and an eerily darting, defiant child-like voice to singularly powerful effect. "Gentle Showers" gently layers buzzing, hypnotic motifs from the pipa and percussion, a march-like cadence from a flute, splashes of color courtesy of a synthesizer and Huang's keening yet heartrendingly beautiful voice. This album ranges from moods soothing to provocative, utilizing the vocabularies of the Western classical (even the pre-classical) tradition as well as the rich tapestry of Chinese folk and classical, not excluding the more adventurous "rock" fusion forms. (Dead Can Dance and David Sylvian are but two examples of the latter.) BITTER LOVE is a splendid work that unpretentiously transcends musical boundaries. Read less

Hauntingly Beautiful September 17, 2013 By Marilyn A. Hayward (Burbank, CA) See All My Reviews "I play this exceptional, creatively stimulating work in my studio. I am a painter. Tan Dun is gifted beyond words. The combo of the voices against the many tones from the instruments suspends you and in a sensual trance.Ying Huang holds you in her voice and never lets you go."
