Notes and Editorial Reviews

Michael Bohnen, often referred to as the "German Chaliapin" was one of the greatest singers ever to grace the stage. He was a bass-baritone in the true sense of the term, in that he was fully able to transcend the limitations implied by both vocal categories. He started his career singing serious bass roles like Sarastro, Rocco, Daland, Lundgraf, King Heinrich and Gurnemanz. Yet only a few years later he took on roles that Richard Wagner himself had classified as high bass roles like Wotan and Hans Sachs and even tackled Italian baritone roles like Amonasro, Tonio and Scarpia. This, however, was no change of vocal category, merely a vocal extension. Despite his baritone repertoire he remained the Mephisto, Kaspar, Gurnemanz, Basilio and Read more Kezal par excellence.
