Notes and Editorial Reviews

David Watkins is an Atlanta-based pianist who studied at the New England Conservatory and currently serves on the piano faculty of Kennesaw State University. He is heard here in a twentieth-century program of considerable range, from the impetuous, Scriabinesque Etudes of the youthful Igor Stravinsky to the hard, atonal stillness of Watkins' former teacher Robert Helps. Like the Helps piece, the Alban Berg Sonata is a work where tonal goals are not immediately obvious from the outset, requiring the performer to be actively involved in shaping the flow; and in both cases Watkins proves himself an excellent judge of musical argument, as well as a most capable player. A valuable addition to the program is Frank Martin's rarely heard Eight Read more Preludes, restless and haunting postwar pieces written by the Swiss composer for the great Romanian pianist Dinu Lipatti.
